heart game writeup
[The mall]
This area of the heart was basically just the intro stage. Nothing could really be changed here, but Brianna (or a younger version of her) would talk to people and give them advice and supplies. This version of Brianna was honest and straightforward. She was affectionate toward people she knew, and curious about the people she didn’t have CR with, because that’s really the crux of what Brianna is like. She gave everyone a map so they could find their way around, some batteries to get into the McClub, and a baggie of pigeon meat, which was basically good for one free heal. Ao came back to this stage after he died and Brianna allowed him to head on to the true heart.
[Carnelian]
This was the area of all things Aather-specific. There were lots of games and general fun things/comforting things set up in this area because Brianna feels that Aather is generally a fun and comforting place to her.
In the living room were a sketchpad (Brianna’s indecision over her names/identities and which one she wants to use), a stack of cards (THE SHIPPING WALL), and a set of toy soldiers (Brianna’s feelings toward Carnelian’s behavior in games—specifically, that Brianna, as the “oldest,” should be a leader in battle, aka games, and that the newer Carnelians (Stiles and Constellations) are the “babies” and should be protected more than the others). In the bedroom were little plushies of all the current members of Carnelian on their respective beds. The kitchen was very firmly Shiny’s Territory.
Changes:
* Nova kept Leah’s card face up, but also left Dean’s and Cassie’s cards face up when she left: Brianna’s crush on Leah is still a thing, but now she also has DEEP PASSIONATE CRUSHES on Dean and Cassie.
* Nova moved Stiles’s soldier figurine up to stand next to hers, so now Stiles is A BABY CARNELIAN NO LONGER.
[Coates Academy]
This are was like, family trauma central, with added horrific torture.
Out front, a car represented a memory of Brianna being left at the school for the first time by her mom. Out back, the pavilion represented all of Brianna’s trauma about what happened to her after the adults vanished. The bucket of cement showed characters a memory of the actual act of plastering, and the rope showed characters a memory of the eight days she spent tied up behind the school. If characters lingered back here, a Drake NPC would show up and give them a chance to run or fight him.
Inside the school, characters could check out Brianna’s dorm room. There were dusty school books and supplies on the desk representing Brianna’s lack of interest in academics. A diary showed a memory of of Brianna on the phone, begging her mom to let her come home, and hinting at the weirdness of her mom and stepdad’s relationship. The diary also had some entries, but they were mostly just filler stuff about Brianna’s experiences at school pre-powers.
Inside the desk drawers were a note from Caine espousing his manipulative view on the other kids with powers, and a bunch of ripped up family photos representing Brianna’s thoughts and memories about her family. Under the bed were containers with stuffed animals and board games and other kid stuff, representing how Brianna tries to hard to be seen as cool and not… childlike…
Changes:
* Jack drove the memory car away from the front of the school, so Brianna’s memory of being left at Coates is just… gone… Like she knows that it happened, but she can’t remember anything about how it felt.
* Nova and Jack both spilled some of the wet concrete, so Brianna’s feelings about the night she was attacked are messier and have kind of spread into other aspects of her life. She’ll be more likely to connect other traumatic things to being plastered now.
* However, E V E R Y O N E ripped down the rope, and Tetsu picked the weeds around the gazebo and left his pigeon meat on the railing, so Brianna is less affected by the actual captivity memory. The trauma is pretty bad, so if she actively sits and thinks about it she’ll still be upset, but it’s easier now to skate over that particular memory.
* Ao and Jack both threw the bucket at Drake; Tetsu and Jack ran from him; and Ao was killed by him. So, everything Drake-wise was more or less cancelled out and her thoughts/feelings about him pretty much stay the same.
* Ao dusted off the schoolbooks, so Brianna is more interested in learning. If the books had actually been left open, this could have increased even more, but lol. who wants that.
* Everyone who went into the dorm room put the family photos back together, so Brianna is more willing to face her memories and feelings about her family. On the one hand, that’s awesome, because Brianna is the queen of putting on a front and pretending she doesn’t really care or miss them. On the other hand, this means that Brianna is actually facing the fact that she’ll never get to see her family again! So, pros and cons.
* Ao wrote “You’re the only one who can decide who is your ‘family’. Biological or those you find yourself. Who you are is defined by yourself. Don’t forget those who surround you and decide for yourself.” on the note from Caine, so she’ll be more open about her “found family” in Aather.
* A few different people unpacked the stuffed animals and stuff which means she’ll be more willing to embrace being a kid and doing kid stuff! DORK ALERT.
[Perdido Beach]
PERDIDO BEACH, THE LAND OF GODLESSNESS AND MORE TRAUMA. But seriously this area was chock full of dead kids and negative feelings.
Inside the Town Hall, characters would find the makeshift FAYZ hospital. There were empty cots, dead kids laid out on the floor, and medical supplies scattered all around. The dead kids here represented the people who have died both in the FAYZ and in Aather, which is why characters who entered this room got a sense that they were responsible for the deaths. The medical supplies were Brianna’s general lack of consideration for the importance of facing her negative memories.
The McClub was the freaks vs normals area of the heart! The drinks on the counter showed a memory of Zil and Brianna’s fight in the club. There was mutant vs normals graffiti all over the walls, representing Brianna’s feelings about the entire issue—both her subconscious feelings of arrogance over nonpowered people and her anger over being treated like a freak—and cans of spray paint next to the drinks.
The graveyard was all about Brianna’s hero worship of Sam and her feelings that the deaths of all the kids in the FAYZ, including her own, were worth it because Sam needed her. Oh boy. The graves were all run down and weedy, but the huge golden statue of Sam sat on the path in front of the graveyard and looked like it had been well cared for. If characters touched the statue they would get the sense that it was kind of… fake? Hollow? Not what it seemed?
Changes:
* Obi and Tetsu put the dead kids onto the cots and covered them up. There was an immediate feeling of relief associated with this, because Brianna honestly doesn’t want to think about the consequences of her actions! Tetsu noticed this and left the youngest kids uncovered, so Brianna is more conscious about how her decisions could (and have) hurt people who are younger and more innocent than she is.
* Obi and Tetsu both cleaned up the medical supplies, so Brianna’s more likely to face her memories instead of ignoring them and letting them scatter. She'll stop avoiding taking her memories in Aather now because she has a sense that she needs to face everything that happens, even if she would rather not.
* Tetsu painted a demon or something on the graffiti wall, and Obi covered up allll the other graffiti and painted some flowers on the wall. Brianna feels like her powers make her a badass demon, but also that both freaks and normals are beautiful flowers…! Her resentment and arrogance toward nonpowered people is gone and she feels like she can appreciate people whether they have powers or not. :|a
* Tetsu cleaned up the graveyard and made sure all the markers were upright, so Brianna is more cognizant of the fact that kids (and herself) DIED in the FAYZ and man it’s awful.
* The statue of Sam is still there, though, so she still feels like everything was for the greater good. :(
[The true heart]
I TOTALLY FLAKED OUT ON THE GAME AFTER THE FIRST NIGHT so this never really got finished but!! :( Ao did get there and start a conversation. Basically he told Gaia (guarding the true heart) that a person shouldn’t have to prove themselves to others, but just to themselves. So this is something that Brianna is going to be taking into account from now on. Why care so much about looking cool? Why not just be herself? GOOD JOB, AO.
